In April, my local artists' guild displays its members' artwork in both galleries of the East Baton Rouge Library in Zachary. Members' select a famous artist in which to be inspired. We then all do a rendering of one of the selected artist's works and paint one based on the inspiration received by that painting. This year, 2018, we selected Georgia O'Keefe. We read about her background, her friends and family, and how she came to known for her artwork. I liked her because she was her own person and was not dragged down by men or the establishment. This painting is somewhat different than her poppy; however, the fundamental element is the same. Some interest is stirring around this painting. I look forward to learning what the media thinks of my work.
As a painter, my goal is to inspire, not just reproduce a subject on a canvas. I like my colors bold with subjects drawn in large, generous forms. I want my work to touch the inner impulse and passion of my viewers. To me, producing art is liberating. Whether I work directly from a perceived subject, plain air, or abstractly, I am most concerned about the work's overall composition and formal aspects. My colors tend to be bright and bold. Bright colors make me happy, and I aspire to convey that feeling to my viewers and customers. I am a native of Sikeston, Missouri, and a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, with a BS in Historic Preservation.
