My husband and I took some friends from Missouri over to Avery Island, Louisiana a few years ago. The island is famous for growing, manufacturing and selling Tabasco Sauce. In the 1800's they also mined salt on the island. Most people park their cars in a visitors parking lot and walk the trails throughout the island. What a surprise to see a large Shrine at an opening. As we approached the shrine we could see a golden Budda inside the glass enclosed building. I was a photographer back then and took many pictures, from various angles. Little did I know I would begin painting at age 65. I remembered this scene and last year I pulled out the pictures, studied them, and this is the result. The Spanish moss has a gold and copper hue to it so I exaggerated that unusual difference in the moss.
As a painter, my goal is to inspire, not just reproduce a subject on a canvas. I like my colors bold with subjects drawn in large, generous forms. I want my work to touch the inner impulse and passion of my viewers. To me, producing art is liberating. Whether I work directly from a perceived subject, plain air, or abstractly, I am most concerned about the work's overall composition and formal aspects. My colors tend to be bright and bold. Bright colors make me happy, and I aspire to convey that feeling to my viewers and customers. I am a native of Sikeston, Missouri, and a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, with a BS in Historic Preservation.
